The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Geneva has become aware of two suspected cases of poliomyelitis among Somali refugees in Bur Amino camp for displaced persons in Dollo Ado in the south of the country. This is a cause of great concern to the UNCHR given the potential for spread amongst the camp. A further three suspected cases of poliomyelitis have been identified in the surrounding host community.
UNHCR is working closely with the Ethiopian Ministry of Health, WHO, UNICEF and MSF to coordinate the response. Laboratory samples have been sent to Addis Ababa for confirmation and strain of polio virus. If confirmed a mass vaccination campaign will be launched in the five refugee camps and surrounding communities.
A nationwide polio vaccination campaign is sheduled to begin on 27 January 2012, and will now be expanded to include all refugee camps.
