The Malaria Combat Programme of Angola has reported a significant reduction in the number of malaria cases countrywide. In 2011, around 2.9 million cases were recorded; this compares with previous years when the estimate was 4.0 million suspected cases per year.
The reduction in malaria cases has been attributed to rapid diagnostics, the introduction of effective treatment and an improved sanitation network throughout the country. These improvements have resulted in a reduction of 700 000 cases of malaria.
Advice for Travellers
Angola remains a high risk destination for malaria and prophylaxis is recommended along with good bite avoidance measures. All fevers should be reported promptly.
