Dengue Fever in Suriname

27 January 2012

The health authorities of Suriname have confirmed an outbreak of dengue fever that began one month ago. More than 300 cases have been laboratory confirmed at one hospital with other laboratories also confirming cases.

Due to overcrowding in hospitals, patients are being treated in military health facilities, however health officials believe that the outbreak is peaking. A crisis team has been established by the health ministry and is working towards intensive education, awareness and mosquito control.
