Cholera in Mozambique (Inhaca Island)

21 February 2012

An outbreak of cholera has been reported from Inhaca Island, 32km from the capital city of Maputo on the mainland. More than 20 suspected cases of cholera are treated every month on the island and the cause is considered to be poor sanitation and lack of safe drinking water. The piped water coverage is very poor on the island of 5000 inhabitants.

The health authorities have instigated an awareness and education campaign, advising residents on water purification and food safety.

Advice for Travellers

Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
