Measles (Suspected) in Democratic Republic of Congo

06 March 2012

A suspected measles outbreak has been reported from the Yambuk health zone and also the health area Yalosemba, 88 kilometres from Yambuku-center, in the region of Bumba, Equateur province. The measles-like illness was first identified in December 2011, and as of February 2012, more that 1067 cases and 27 resulting deaths have been recorded.

Clinical samples have been sent to two reference laboratories in the last two weeks for confirmation of the diagnosis of measles. A WHO representative, reports that the situation is serious, however a vaccination campaign will not be implemented until the diagnosis of measles virus infection has been confirmed. In the meantime appropriate medical treatment will be made available.

Advice for Travellers

It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of MMR at 12-15 months of age and again pre-school around 3 years 6 months, while unimmunised adults who have not had the disease themselves may consider vaccination if thought to be at risk. Two doses of MMR vaccine are required to give adequate protection.
