Malaria case in the Bahamas

29 March 2012

The Centres for Disease Control (CDC) has recently received an official report of a confirmed case of malaria in a U.S. traveller who had visited the island of Great Exuma in the Bahamas, in March 2012. The traveller has no history of other recent travel outside the U.S.

Malaria is not endemic in the Bahamas; there was an outbreak during 2006 and the last documented case was in 2008. Malaria control measures have been implemented.

Travellers to the Bahamas should take precautions to avoid mosquito bites. If they show any signs of malaria such as fever or flu-like illness up to one year after visiting, they should seek medical advice.
