Macedonia's Ministry of Agriculture has reported to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) one case of rabies in a domestic cat in Radovis (east of the country). This is officially the 1st case of rabies observed in cats in the country. The cat attacked its owners on 2 March 2012. Laboratory analysis performed in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (Skopje) proved the cat was infected with rabies. The owners of the cat have been appropriately treated with rabies post-exposure prophylaxis. The other animals (a dog and a cat) from the same yard, which had contact with the infected cat, have been euthanized.
In Macedonia vaccination is compulsory in dogs, not in cats. The last case of rabies officially reported in Macedonia was in a wild animal in August 2011

Advice to Travellers
Travellers should be aware of the rabies risk and avoid contact with animals and dogs in particular. Rabies pre-exposure vaccine is available for those considered to be at risk
