Malaria in India

An increase in the number of cases of Plasmodium vivax malaria has been reported from the city of Ahmedabad in Gujarat state in the west of India.

Cases of P.vivax malaria began to appear at the end of 2011, and an increase has continued in 2012. Between Jan-Mar this year, a total of 630 cases have been recorded in the city; this compares with 330 cases for the same time period in 2011.

Malaria surveillance and screening has been increased by the health department of the city.

Advice for Travellers

Gujarat state is a variable risk area for malaria and chemoprophylaxis is recommended. Travellers should also take steps to avoid mosquito bites and report any fevers promptly, even up to one year after visiting the area.
