An outbreak of cholera has been reported from Blantyre district in southern Malawi. Cholera cases were first identified in December 2011, and to date more than 200 cases have been reported with 11 cholera related deaths.
Blantyre city health officials blame the outbreak on a lack of safe drinking water and poor santiation. A chronic water shortage has lead to individuals taking water from streams and shallow wells.
Advice for Travellers
Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
