Cholera in Democratic Republic of Congo

Cholera in endemic in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and is an ongoing problem. Around 8000 cholera cases have been recorded during the first three months of 2012. At present, the worst affected area is the Eastern DRC with South Kivu province reporting the highest number of cases at more than 2200. In Eastern DRC, 77 cholera related deaths have been recorded so far in 2012. This compares with 150 for the whole of 2011, in the area.

Advice for Travellers

Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
