Typhoid Fever in Zambia

12 April 2012

An outbreak of typhoid fever has been reported from Kabwe district in Central Province. The outbreak began last week and to date 142 cases have been recorded. The townships worst affected include Ngungu, Chimanimani and Bwacha.

Residents of the townships have been consuming water from shallow wells that are thought to be contaminated and samples have been taken for laboratory testing. Chlorine has been distributed for water purification in the meantime while steps are being taken to connect the townships to the main water system.
