A total of 116 individuals infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella (enterica serotype) Bareilly have been reported from 20 states and the District of Columbia. The 16 new cases are from Florida (1), Georgia (1), Illinois (1), Maryland (1), Massachusetts (4), Missouri (1), New York (1), Pennsylvania (2), Rhode Island (1), and Wisconsin (3).
Illnesses that occurred after 14 Mar 2012, might not be reported yet due to the time it takes between when a person becomes ill and when the illness is reported.
Investigation of the outbreak has identified a frozen yellowfin tuna product called Nakaochi Scrape as the likely source of infection. This product is used in sushi, sashimi, ceviche, spicy tuna and similar dishes. In the US this product is imported from a processing plant in India. To date, 7 clusters related to restaurants or grocery stores have been identified in 5 states: Connecticut, Maryland, Rhode Island, Texas and Wisconsin.
Advice for Travellers
Travellers to the US should be aware of this outbreak and avoid the dishes mentioned in this report as a precaution. Returning travellers who are experiencing symptoms of the illness should report to their GP.
