Cholera in Ghana

An outbreak of cholera has been reported from the Greater Accra region in the south of the country. Around 1570 cases and 21 cholera related deaths have been registered.

Health officials report that local hospitals are well equiped to deal with cholera cases at present and the deaths have occurred in those who seek treatment late in the illness.

Advice for Travellers

Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
