A total of 223 human deaths from rabies virus infection were recorded in India in 2011.
West Bengal state reported the highest number of human rabies deaths (73), followed by the states of Andhra Pradesh (45), Orissa (24), Tamil Nadu (21), Karnataka (18), Delhi (17) and Gujarat (16).
Advice for Travellers
Travellers should be made aware that India is considered to be a high risk destination for rabies and avoidance of all animal contact is advised. Pre-exposure rabies vaccine is available for those considered to be at risk. Any animal bites/scratches should be reported immediately and assessed by a medical practitioner.
