Meningococcal Disease in Ethiopia

During the past week, five suspected cases of meningococcal meningitis were reported from Kembata Tembaro and Hadiya zones of Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples region (SNNPR), bringing the total number to 125 cases reported since the beginning of the outbreak in early March.

The Regional Health Bureau is currently finalizing planning for the mass meningitis vaccination campaign scheduled to take place in the worst affected areas.

Advice for Travellers

Quadrivalent meningococcal vaccine is available for travellers considered to be at risk. The higher risk season for meningococcal meningitis in Ethiopia is generally between December and June.
