Rabies (Human) in Vietnam

10 May 2012

The Ministry of Health has reported an increase in the number of human deaths from rabies virus infection.

Since the beginning of the year (2012), more than 13 individuals have died from rabies infection in the northern provinces of Dien Bien, Yen Bai, Ha Giang, Tuyen Quang, Phu Tho, Son La, and the central province of Nghe An.

The agriculture sector has been asked by the Ministry of Health to strengthen and monitor control of dogs and rabies vaccination and to implement awareness programmes to raise the responsibility of dog owners and alert communities to the danger of rabies for humans.

Advice for Travellers

Vietnam is considered to be a high risk destination for rabies and travellers should be made aware of the risk and be advised to avoid all animal contact. Any animal bites sustained must be assessed by a medical professional. Rabies pre-exposure vaccine is available for those considered to be at risk.
