Malaria in Madagascar

The Ministry of Health has reported an outbreak of malaria in Madagascar from the beginning of May 2012. Sixty cases have been treated in hospital and 7 malaria deaths recorded. Madagascar has seen an increase in the number of malaria cases in theĀ first months of 2012, compared with the previous year.

Advice for Travellers

Madagascar is a high risk destination for malaria and prophylaxis is recommended for travellers. Mosquito bite avoidance and prompt reporting of any fever is also strongly recommended.
