Measles in the Republic of Ireland

22 May 2012

An outbreak of measles has been confirmed in West Cork, with 25 cases recorded in the last month. No measles cases were recorded for the first three months of 2012. The outbreak is primarily among unvaccinated teenagers however, in recent days the total number of cases has risen to 31 and two of the new cases are primary school children.

Health officials are concerned that the outbreak will spread among younger children as MMR vaccine uptake is lower in West Cork than the national average (86% and 92% respectively).

Advice for Travellers

It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of MMR at 12-15 months of age and again pre-school around 3 years 6 months, while unimmunised adults who have not had the disease themselves may consider vaccination if thought to be at risk. Two doses of MMR vaccine are required to give adequate protection.
