The World Health Organisation has announced a new human case of avian influenza virus infection (H5N1). The case is a 10-year-old girl from southwestern Kampong Speu province who had contact with sick poultry before becoming unwell. The Cambodian Health Ministry reported that the girl developed a fever and shortness of breath on 20 May 2012, and died on 26 May 2012.
This is the 3rd fatality from highly pathogenic avian influenza virus infection this year(2012) in Cambodia. Since 2003, there have been 21 human cases of avian influenza, 19 of which have resulted in death.
