Measles in Somalia

13 June 2012

Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) has reported that measles cases have been increasing across Somalia, more noticably over the past six months.

Since the beginning of the year (2012), MSF has treated 4,288 patients with measles in health centers across Somalia1. In areas where vaccination campaigns are in place, MSF is still identifying measles cases every day. MSF has treated 586 measles patients since start of the year in Burco, an area unaffected by conflict that routinely has vaccination campaigns, which may indicate that the vaccination programme is not fully effective.

Advice for Travellers

It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of MMR at 12-15 months of age and again pre-school around 3 years 6 months, while unimmunised adults who have not had the disease themselves may consider vaccination if thought to be at risk. Two doses of MMR vaccine are required to give adequate protection.
