An outbreak of cholera has been reported from Assam state in the north of India.
More than 500 cases have been recorded from seven districts of the state. Four individuals have died as a result of cholera; 2 located in Sivsagar and 2 in Darrang and Cachar districts.
The worst affected districts are Sivsagar, Darrand and Cachar and rapid response units have been established in these areas. The districts of Jorhat, Golaghat, Dibrugarh and Sonitpur have been put onĀ high alert to the risk of cholera spreading.
Advice for Travellers
Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
