The media has reported on an outbreak of acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) in Bihar state in the north of India.
Reportedly 348 children have had symptoms of AES and 129 have died as a result since the the beginning of theĀ outbreak in May 2012. The state government has launched a campaign in the affected areas to raise awareness of the illness and ensure treatment of the children affected.
At present there is no viral laboratory services in Bihar state to identify the exact aetiology of this outbreak. In the past, casesĀ AES of unknown aetiology and Japaneses encephalitis have been reported simultaneously in this area. Further official clarification of the situation is awaited.
Advice for Travellers
Japanese encephalitis vaccine is available for those considered to be at risk. Avoidance of mosquito bites by 'covering up', using insect repellent and impregnated bed nets is essential. Travellers should also maintain a high standard of food, water and personal hygiene whilst in this area as AES may be caused by an enterovirus.
