The Department of Health has declared an outbreak of cholera in Catanduanes province where cholera cases have increased from the beginning of the year (2012). As of 13 June 2012, a total of 1370 cases and 8 cholera related deaths have been recorded. The worst affected area is the town of Virac with 748 cases and 6 deaths reported.
Health officials blame the practice of drinking water from contaminated rivers as one cause of ongoing transmission of cholera.
Advice for Travellers
Travellers to outbreak areas are advised to maintain a high standard of food, water and personal hygiene. Only those who may have direct contact with infected individuals, or those who cannot maintain safe food and water precautions, should be vaccinated.
