Tick-borne Encephalitis in Lithuania

21 June 2012

Ten cases of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) have been reported in Vilniaus in the south of Lithuania. It is suspected that the disease was transmitted through the consumption of unpasteurised goat's milk. During the first week of Jun 2012, a further two cases of TBE were reported in the Trakai region. The source of infection in these cases is also though to be unpasteurised goat's milk.

Advice for Travellers

Travellers should be aware that TBE can be transmitted by the consumption of unpasteurised milk and milk products as well as the more common route i.e. the bite of an infected tick.

Unpasteurised milk/products should be avoided and steps should also be taken to avoid tick bites in rural areas during the spring and summer months as all districts of the country are affected.
