Diphtheria in Kenya

21 June 2012

The Kenya Red Cross Society has reported an outbreak of diphtheria in Dagahaley, one of the five refugee camps that make up Dadaab.

In the past two weeks, three children affected by the infection have died. The Red Cross completed an emergency vaccination campaign in five days that targeted 13 000 children housed within the camps.

Advice for Travellers

This outbreak is a low risk for travellers visiting the popular tourist destinations in Kenya. However all travellers should ensure that they are up-to-date with the UK schedule for diphtheria vaccination. A primary course should be recommended for individuals unimmunised against diphtheria.
