There have been 9 confirmed deaths and 98 suspected cases of Bolivian Haemorrhagic Fever from the department of Beni (north of the country). This appears to be a continuation of the outbreak that began at the end of November last year (2011).
Machupo virus causes this disease and is transmitted by the large vesper mouse which is commonly found in Beni.
The mouse can be persistently infected with the virus, a situation common among arenaviruses and their rodent hosts.
Advice for Travellers
Rare in travellers. Transmitted through excreta from rodents and from infected patients in conditions of poor hygiene.
