Cholera in South Sudan

29 June 2012

There have been media reports that a 6 year old boy has died and 16 people have been to hospital in Bentiu hospital, after a suspected cholera outbreak in Hayingas and Tiedbar villages within Bentiu town and Rubkotna County. Cholera has not been laboratory confirmed but the diagnosis seems likely given the diarrhoeal symtoms. The recent heavy rains have contributed to the problem.

Advice for Travellers

Travellers to outbreak areas are advised to maintain a high standard of food, water and personal hygiene. Only those who may have direct contact with infected individuals, or those who cannot maintain safe food and water precautions, should be vaccinated.
