Acute Encephalitis Syndrome in India (Update)

02 July 2012

Cases of acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) continue to be reported from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh although the actual aetiological agent remains unclear. The most recent laboratory testing on samples from Mazaffarpur district have proven negative for Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV)

Advice for Travellers

Avoidance of mosquito bites by 'covering up', using insect repellent and impregnated bed nets is essential to avoid insect borne disease. Travellers should also maintain a high standard of food, water and personal hygiene whilst in this area as AES may be caused by an enterovirus. In addition Japanese encephalitis vaccine is available for those considered to be at risk.
