Rabies (Human) in China

A resident of Beijing has died from rabies virus infection. The man was bitten by his own dog on 12 May 2012, he refused treatment of the wound and post-exposure prophylaxis, developed symptoms of rabies infection on 18 June and died on 23 June 2012.

This is the 5th case of rabies infection ocurring in Beijing City in 2012.

Advice for Travellers

Visitors to Beijing City should be aware that rabies infection is still prevalent in the canine population despite stringent controls. All contact with animals should be avoided and any bites sustained must be assessed carefully immediately. Pre-exposure rabies vaccine may be considered for travellers to China.
