Japanese Encephalitis in India

An outbreak of Japanese encephalitis (JE) infection has been reported from Sivasagar district of Assam State in the far northeast of India.

Health officals report 22 deaths from JE with a further 28 suspected cases currently receiving treatment in hospital. This report does not mention laboratory confirmation of JE infection.

Advice for Travellers

Japanese encephalitis vaccine is available for travellers considered to be at risk. Travellers should also be given advice on bite avoidance measures.
