Health officials from Taichung in the east of the country have reported two cases of Japanese encephalitis (JE) infection. Both cases are women, aged 30 years and 40 years who live close to rice paddies and who developed symptoms of JE infection in late June 2012. One of the cases has been discharged from hospital while the other continues to receive treatment.
There have been 23 confirmed cases of JE infection in Taiwan as a whole in 2012.
Advice for Travellers
Travellers considered to be at risk can be immunised against JE. All travellers to Taiwan should take precautions to avoid mosquito bites and report any fevers promptly.
