One new poliomyelitis case was reported in the past week from Balochistan, bringing the total number of cases for 2012 to 23. It is the most recent case in the country with onset of paralysis on 22 June.
The third round of National Immunization Days (NIDs) began this week, targeting 34 million children under 5 years-old. A number of government officials participated in launching the NIDs in their jurisdictions.
North and South Waziristan, are not participating during the 16–18 July NIDs. There are reports of local leaders in these districts suspending polio immunizations. This affects approximately 280,000 children under 5 years-old.
