Chikungunya in Sierra Leone

The re-emergence of chikungunya virus infection has been reported from Sierra Leone after a period of 34 years. Laboratory samples of 25 patients presenting with fever and polyarthralgia have tested positive for chikungunya virus. The cases were identified in the city of Bo in the southern province of Sierra Leone.

Advice for Travellers

Chikungunya virus is one of several mosquito-borne infections that are present in Sierra Leone; travellers should be made aware of the risks and be advised on mosquito bite avoidance measures.
