Measles in Pakistan

A measles outbreak is ongoing in the province of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. A total of 4048 suspected cases have been recorded in the first 5 months of the year (2012). The highest number of cases occurred in Peshawar (1276), followed by DI Khan (642), Malakand (579), Swat (352) and Bannu (180).

Of the 4084 suspected cases, 3029 had previously been vaccinated against measles.

Advice for Travellers

It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of MMR at 12-15 months of age and again pre-school around 3 years 6 months, while unimmunised adults who have not had the disease themselves may consider vaccination if thought to be at risk. Two doses of MMR vaccine are required to give adequate protection.
