A cluster of tick-borne encephalitis cases has been reported by the media. Thirteen residents of Lida are thought to have acquired the infection following consumption of unpasteurised milk from goats infected with the virus. All members of the family who kept the goats have been affected. Investigation is ongoing and epidemiologists are looking for other individuals who may have consumed the infected goat milk.

Advice for Travellers
Travellers should be made aware that tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) can also be transmitted by consuming raw milk from goats infected by the virus as well as being bitten by infected ticks.
Consumption of unpasteurised milk and milk products should be avoided at all times. TBE vaccine is available for those considered to be at risk.
