Dengue Fever in Greece (Probable)

07 September 2012

An elderly man has died in Greece in what officials believe to be the country's 1st case of dengue fever since the 1920s. The man, in his 80s, lived in the western village of Agrinio. He died in hospital on 30 Aug (2012) of septic shock, although there were underlying medical factors which may have contributed to his death.

From past entomological research, it is known that Aedes albopictus mosquitoes have existed in West Greece since 2003. The Hellenic CDC is investigating the case in depth.

Advice for Travellers

Avoidance of mosquito bites, particularly during daylight hours, by covering up with clothing, the use of bite avoidance measures such as repellent and bed nets is advised. Elimination of breeding sites around hotel rooms/houses is advised for longer term stays.
