Diphtheria in India (Suspected)

10 September 2012

According to the Haryana health authorities, 5 children have died due to a suspected outbreak of diphtheria in the city of Panipat. The deaths have been reported from the urban slum areas - Davar Colony and Ashok Vihar - located adjacent to Kutani road.

Advice for Travellers

This outbreak is a low risk for travellers visiting the popular tourist destinations in India. However all travellers should ensure that they are up-to-date with the UK schedule for diphtheria vaccination. A primary course should be recommended for individuals unimmunised against diphtheria.
