CDC has received reports of four cases of sarcocystosis that have been associated with 2012 summer travel to Tioman Island in Malaysia. Last year, 33 travellers returning from Tioman Island were similarly diagnosed with sarcocystosis.

Advice for Travellers

Sarcocystosis is a parasitic infection that usually affects animals but can also affect humans. Most human infections are asymptomatic but reported symptoms include fever, diarrhoea and muscle pain. The parasite is transmitted via the ingestion of food contaminated by animal faeces. While travelling, you should follow food and water precautions and maintain a good standard of personal hygiene.
