Measles is an ongoing problem in the county of Sussex in the UK. In 2011, the number of measles cases in the county was 10 times that recorded in 2010.
Measles cases in 2012, have continued to be reported and to date, a total of 325 confirmed cases have been recorded. Brighton and Hove is the worst affected area with 192 measles cases thus far in 2012.
Parents are being urged to ensure that their children have received two doses of MMR vaccine.
Advice for Travellers
It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of MMR at 12-15 months of age and again pre-school around 3 years 6 months, while unimmunised adults who have not had the disease themselves may consider vaccination if thought to be at risk. Two doses of MMR vaccine are required to give adequate protection.
