Rabies in Nigeria (Human, Canine)

15 October 2012

The incidence of canine rabies has increased three-fold in the Cross River state of south eastern Nigeria. In June 2012, a man died who was suspected to be suffering from rabies virus infection; he had been bitten by a dog three months earlier. Since then, around 8 human deaths from rabies have been recorded in the area.

This area may be a particularly high risk for rabies as Cross River state is known for trade of dogs and consumption of dog meat. These dogs come from other states of the country and also from neighbouring countries.

Advice for Travellers

Angola is a high risk destination for rabies and travellers should be made aware and be advised to avoid all animal contact and report any bites immediately. Pre-exposure rabies vaccine is available for those considered to be at risk.
