Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) has reported a three-fold increase in malaria in Northern Bahr-el-Ghazal state since last year (2011). Between March and August 2012, MSF have admitted more than 1000 children suffering from malaria to their hospital.
The increase in cases is thought to be attributable to a higher number of mosquitoes following an extended and particularly heavy rainy season. The severe rains and flooding has caused some areas to be isolated from health services.
Also, this year there were no distributions of mosquito nets.
