An outbreak of cholera has been identified in Iraq although the authorities report that it has been controlled
The worst affected area is the northern Kurdistan region, where 272 confirmed cases and 4 deaths were recorded. A further 15 cases were recorded in Kirkuk. The source of the cholera outbreak is thought to be polluted water, mainly from a dam and a well in Sulaimaniya province.
In 2007, at least 24 people died and more than 4,000 cases were recorded in a cholera outbreak. The country’s water and sewerage systems are outdated and infrastructure development has been hindered by years of war and neglect.

Advice for Travellers
Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
