American Trypanosomiasis in Brazil

17 October 2012

An outbreak of American trypanosomiasis (also known as Chagas disease) has been reported from the city of Abaetetuba in the interior of Para state in northern Brazil.

More than 24 cases have been identified in the area and one individual has died as a result. The outbreak is thought to be due to the consumption of contaminated fruit from the acai palm tree. The fruit from this tree is attractive to the bug that transmits Chagas disease, it contaminates the fruit by defecating on it. If the fruit is not correctly cleaned the infection will be transmitted to the consumer.

Advice for Travellers

Travellers should always be selective about the food they eat when travelling. Unwashed fruit is to be avoided at all times. Further information for travellers on safe food and water practices and American trypanosomiasis is available via the TRAVAX 'Suitcase'.
