Typhoid Fever in Peru

An outbreak of typhoid fever has been reported by the media. As of 11 October 2012, 60 cases of typhoid have been reported in Pomata district and 3 in Juli distrtict of Puno province in the southeast of Peru.

The source of the outbreak is thought to be contaminated drinking water.

Advice for Travellers

Typhoid vaccine is usually recommended for all travellers to Peru. Care should also be taken with food, water and personal hygiene.
