A sharp increase in the number of human cases of rabies virus infection has been reported from the northern mountainous region of Thailand.
A total of 74 human deaths have been recorded this year (2012) in the northern mountainous provinces. Of those, 96% were the result of dog bites. Due to the terrain, systematic vaccination of the dog population is difficult and rabies awareness is low in these remote areas.
Advice for Travellers
Thailand is a high risk destination for rabies and travellers should be made aware and be advised to avoid all animal contact and report any bites as soon as possible for assessment. Rabies pre-exposure vaccine may be considered.
