As of 23 Oct 2012, 681 cases (72% confirmed) of pertussis have been reported in 24 of 33 regions. The number of cases has increased by approximately 200% compared with cases reported in 2011. The highest numbers of cases were reported in Loreto, Ayacucho, Cajamarca, Amazonas, Ucayali and Lima.

Advice for Travellers

Parents should ensure that children have received their routine immunisations against pertussis as per UK national immunisation schedule. Immunisation against pertussis is not recommended for children over the age of 10 or adults in the UK (Green Book) but in many countries, including Australia, US and Canada, a booster dose in adolescence is part of the national vaccination schedule.
