Japanese Encephalitis in India

13 November 2012

Cases of Japanese encephalitis (JE) have been reported in Malkangiri district, Odisha (Orissa) state on the east coast of central India.

In recent months, 24 children have died among five villages in the district. An investigation of the outbreak has identified JE virus in 10 out of 70 samples sent for laboratory testing.

Advice for Travellers

Japanese encephalitis vaccine is sometimes advised for travellers to risk areas particularly during the high risk season. Bite avoidance measures are also recommended.
