An increase in the number of cholera cases has been reported in Guinea Bissau by the media.
As of 11 November 2012, 1500 cases and 11 cholera related deaths have been recorded by the Ministry of Health. The outbreak has spread across 7 of Guinea-Bissau’s 9 administrative areas. One cholera treatment centre in the capital of Bissau has treated 500 cases in recent weeks and medical staff believe that the outbreak has not yet peaked. The capital has minimal to non-existant water and sanitation facilities which greatly facilitates the spread of cholera within the city.
Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is helping to treat patients. UNICEF and the World Health Organization are also supporting treatment, as well as helping detect cases and giving public hygiene messages to prevent the spread.

Advice for Travellers
Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
