Cholera in Democratic Republic of Congo

During the year 2012, 31 994 cases of cholera with 772 deaths were reported from nine out of eleven provinces in Democratic Republic of Congo. The most affected area was Nord Kivu province with 8455 cases and 87 deaths.

Cases were also reported in the provinces of Katanga (6572), Orientale (5711), Sud Kivu (4494), Equateur (2951), Bandudu (1443), Bas Congo (1403) and Kinshasa (951).

Advice for Travellers

Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
