Measles in the United Kingdom

30 January 2013

An outbreak of measles has been ongoing in the North East of England since September 2012. To date, more than 100 suspected cases have been recorded and of those, 56 have been laboratory confirmed.

The outbreak is occurring mainly among unvaccinated or partially vaccinated school children. The situation is causing concern as almost a quarter of those affected have required admission to hospital.

In 2011, there were only 18 confirmed cases of measles recorded in the North East of England.

Advice for Travellers

It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of MMR at 12-15 months of age and again pre-school around 3 years 6 months, while unimmunised adults who have not had the disease themselves may consider vaccination if thought to be at risk. Two doses of MMR vaccine are required to give adequate protection.
